YOWZA! Is next week Teen Read Week ALREADY? I hope ya’ll are ready because I so feel like I’m not! Regardless of how prepared I’m feeling, we have some fun events planned:

Big Bad Craft Day, WEDNESDAY, October 21, 5:30p.m. @ Josey Ranch Lake Library
We’ll be making yarn aliens and goth sock puppets. Make a fuzzy and/or socky friend(s) to take home!

Clash of the Creatures: The Amazing Library Race, FRIDAY, October 23, 6:30pm @ Josey Ranch Lake Library
Grab a partner and race against others to complete all the challenges. Don’t forget to bring your signed permission slip!

We know how much you love running around the library, so for Teen Read Week we are having our very own Amazing Race ® through the Josey Ranch Lake Library!

Like the tv show, teams of two will have to complete a number of challenges. The team that finishes first will be our Ultimate Reality Super Duo!

I can’t tell you what kind of challenges you’ll be faced with…you’ll have to show up and find out for yourself!

Audience: Grades 8th and up; ages 13 and up
My Rating: 5*s of 5
Summary: “Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls. “Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another. I am that girl. I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through. I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.
Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.
My Comments: IMHO, Wintergirls is as close to perfect they come. The hook is immediately gripping, pacing is just right, Lia is frustrating and fascinating, and Cassie is mesmerizing. Some passages made me shiver, some made me physically revolted, they all made me want to read more. The writing devices Anderson includes (strikeout type, font changes, numbering the 33 times Cassie called, punctuation play) all combine deftly to tell this riveting story.

This book is about

Cammie Morgan’s spy skills again take her past the walls of the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women – a school that itself is undercover as a spy school. This time, Cammie and her friend Macey are in some trouble. Macey’s dad is running for vice president and Macey has to follow her family around to campaign. That is, until a kidnapping plot turns both her and Cammie’s worlds upside down. Questions fill the girls’ minds and worry fills their hearts. New faces and old faces seem to follow Cammie everywhere, including a certain ex-boyfriend and a certain family member who has been missing from her life. All four girls are sure in for a challenge that will require every bit of their spy training.

I loved/hated this book because

While far more dramatic than the other two in Carter’s spy series, this latest installment maintains the lighthearted narration of a teenage girl. This book is definitely different than the other two. There is a lot more action, and it isn’t staged by her teachers this go-round. Instead of Cammie attempting to disappear as a pavement artist, this one is more about the danger of spying. I’m not saying this is bad or good, it kind of feels like a good progression for Cammie as a character. Many people say this is their favorite of the series, but I just can’t pick a favorite – I love them all!!
