Airman by Eoin Colfer
Librarian Marianne had this to say about the book on CD for Airman.
I cannot say enough about this book! Well…audio book. When I read the description on the back cover I thought… “Oh well, I am not listening to anything right now, so I will give it a try.” Boy, was I wrong. The story grabbed me so hard, it invaded my dreams.
Written by Eoin Colfer, author of my all time favorite audio book series, Artemis Fowl, this story chronicles the life of Conor Broekhart. Born in a hot air balloon, Conor was meant to live his life in the sky. After a sheltered and magical childhood with his best friend, a princess, a loving family and genius tutor; Conor’s life takes a 180 degree turn when he stumbles upon a traitorous plot. Forces align against Conor when he is found guilty of treason and sentenced to a hard labor camp where he spends his days struggling to survive and planning his revenge.

BTW…at the labor camp, Conor is forced into a diving bell where he is forced to mine for diamonds. Being a bit claustrophobic myself…and with such great detail laden descriptions, this is the part of the book that invaded my dreams.
I love the narrator’s voice but thought his “American” accent a bit “John Wayne-ish.” (I think it is funny to hear a British do an American accent. We all either seem to be from New York or the South. This is the first western accent I have heard on an audio book though…so I guess they are branching out, “Pilgrim!”)
I won’t give away the end, but it was very satisfying. I highly recommend you give Eoin Colfer’s Airman a listen…or a read.

Heh, I’m in the middle of reading that right now, and its an awesome book. I especially like the way he befriends Otto Malarkey, and how he’s suddenly a black-dressed Devil. It’s kinda like being a superhero, isn’t it?
Well, you’ve definitely intrigued me. This book has bumped up several notches on my “TO READ” list!
