Shug by Jenny Han

January 17, 2008

Links to Jenny Han’s site in this post updated 4-15-10.

Did you ever have a crush on your best guy friend? Every time you see him you’re wondering if he likes you back. You want more than anything for him to kiss you…

Did a close friend get a boyfriend before you did? You used to understand each other COMPLETELY. You could always count on her to be there for you. Now all of a sudden she’s like somebody else and she always wants to spend time with HIM…

That’s what AnneMarie, known as Shug to her family, is going through. On top of that she’s starting middle school and everyone is acting differently.

The way Jenny Han wrote Shug, AnneMarie is so real she could be someone in your class…your best friend…or even you!

5-24-08 UPDATE: Those of you looking for the theme of Shug might try using some of the book reviews written in library journals as a starting point. Jenny has them on her site.

2-18-09 UPDATE: If you didn’t see the Jenny Han Web site I put in the comments below you gotta check it out. If you click on News you can even get her e-mail address to ask HER for a Shug sequel. Her next book (no, it’s NOT a sequel to Shug) called The Summer I Turned Pretty will be available May 5, 2009. I’ll add the link to the catalog once we get it ordered for the library. You can also check out reviews of Shug to help get you jump-started if you’re writing a paper on Shug.

4-15-10 UPDATE: I updated the links to Jenny’s site in this post today. Also, those of you who want a sequel or who really love-love-love Shug, can let Jenny know directly. Her e-mail address is on the contact page on her new site. A sequel to The summer I turned pretty is coming out April 27 called It’s not summer without you. We don’t own it yet at the library, but hopefully we’ll get it soon.

Robyn, thanks for the book to try — Bloom by Elizabeth Scott! We don’t have it at the Carrollton Public Library but I just sent it to Jennie as a suggestion to order. I was just checking out Jenny Han’s Web site and on the Shug page she made a “mix tape” for Shug. (if you don’t know what a mix tape is think playlist) You gotta check it out – just scroll to the bottom to find it. http://www.dearjennyhan.com/shug.html (Link updated 4-15-10)

Who would you say the main characters are in this book besides Shug and Mark? Also, What do you think the main theme of the story is?

Sorry it took so long to get your comment live! I really think there is only 1 main character. Everyone else is secondary to Shug. As for themes, I was not an English major so I tend not to analyze books that much when I read them. You could try the book reviews on Jenny Han’s site to get you started thinking about themes. There is a link in the update at the end of the post.

    Chloe,

The good news is that Jenny finished her second book, The Summer I Turned Pretty!!! But since it takes so long for them to edit the book and then actually make them, it won’t be available until May of 2009. It is NOT a sequel to Shug, but I know we’ll love it anyway! woo hoo!

love book can you write sequal???

  12. October 3, 2008 11:01 am

WE COULD write a sequel, but it probably couldn’t compare to what the original author Jenny Han could do! Let her know you want one. If enough fans ask, she just might do it!

I love this book! What’s the genre? I wonder ehat Jenny Han’s email address is. I’ll ask her to write a sequel!

i love this boook with a passion. it is so realistic, i feel like i know shug. she is decribed as a teenager going through actual teen problems, shug is going through boys problems, friend problems, and family related problems. she thinks she is ugly, and hey, what girl doesn’t. i believe that this book deserves a sequal and shug is my favorite book, besides Lush. i recomend this for teenage girls who are having the same probelms, it will helpp.(:
